The Lossless Group · Self-Host Stack
Self-hosted open source has no per-seat licence. That single fact changes how a small firm operates: you can give advisors, associates, interns, fund admins and outside counsel real access to the systems they need — and your cost doesn't move. Access stops being a budget decision.
9 things a small firm actually pays for
$264/seat/mo
Affinity, Dropbox Business, Microsoft Teams, Confluence Standard, Calendly Standard, 1Password Business, Power BI, DocuSign Standard, Airtable Team — cheapest tier of each.
Now bring in 6 advisors and interns — 12 people
$3,168/mo
Same nine tools. You just multiplied by headcount.
Self-hosted, managed by us
$0/seat
Infrastructure is $50–$500/mo for the whole firm — not per person.
Open source self-hosted means no per-seat licence — ever. Add the advisor, the associate, the intern, the fund admin, the outside counsel. The bill does not move. Small teams stop rationing access to their own systems.
CRM, data room, wiki, mail, scheduling, BI, automation, identity — nearly everything an investment team runs, chosen to work together rather than assembled by accident.
Everything lives on infrastructure you own, so a single agent with our harness deploys it, updates it, backs it up and fixes it. No vendor queue, no support ticket, no waiting on a roadmap.
We hold the database, not a rate-limited API key. That means cross-tool intelligence and visualisations no SaaS integration can reach — your pipeline joined to your data-room activity joined to your inbox.
A single connector fronts every tool, so day to day the only interface you need is Claude on desktop and mobile. Ask for the thing; the stack does it.
The layer that ties it together
A single MCP connector fronts every tool below, so the day-to-day interface stops being twelve browser tabs and becomes a conversation. Ask for the thing; the stack does it.
No new app to learn
Desktop and mobile, using the client your team already opens every morning. Add one connector and the whole stack is reachable from the chat you're already in — your CRM, your data room, your wiki, your calendar. That is the intended way to run this.
Prefer to own the chat surface too? These are for teams who want to adventure — the whole loop, including the model interface, on hardware you control. Optional, not required.

Security
Self-hosting is usually pitched on cost. The stronger argument is containment: a firm's most sensitive material — pipeline, LP commitments, diligence files, board decks — stops being a row in somebody else's multi-tenant database.
Your own project, your own database, your own storage bucket. Not a row in a shared table with a permissions column — there is no multi-tenant query that could ever return another firm's deal flow, because there is no shared database.
No support engineer, no analytics pipeline, no model trainer. Services talk to each other over a private network; the only public surface is the one you choose to expose.
Because the AI layer is self-hosted too, diligence questions and portfolio data never reach someone else's inference API — the single biggest unmanaged leak in most firms right now.
SSO with MFA in front of the tools that support it, admin surfaces reachable only over a private tailnet rather than the public internet, and — because we hold the databases — a unified audit log across them. SaaS can't give you that last one: each vendor's log stops at its own wall. A handful of tools keep their own login; those are flagged on their card rather than glossed over.
And it isn't a lock-in either. We run client stacks on Railway today, but nothing here is Railway-specific: the same bundle deploys to Fly.io, to Coolify on any cloud you already buy, or to anything with a one-click deploy and a CLI. If you want it on your own AWS account under your own security review, that is a configuration change, not a rebuild.
42 make up the canonical firmOS — the parts most firms need. 8 are running in production for clients today. The rest is the bench: proven open source we can stand up when a firm has the need.
Nothing matches that filter.
Portfolio Monitoring
Visible, Totem and Carta Portfolio have no open-source equivalent — not a small one, not an early one. Searching for one turns up personal stock-and-crypto trackers that model none of what a fund needs: portco KPI collection, LP quarterly reporting, capital-call accounting, ownership math. The honest answer is a custom build on Grist, NocoDB or Baserow with Metabase over the top: a few days of setup, shaped to your actual reporting cadence, joined to the CRM and data room without an integration licence. We would rather tell you that than sell you a spreadsheet with a new name.

Research Capture
Bookmark everything — links, notes, images — with AI auto-tagging and full-text search.

Agent Chat & Harness
AI chat and enterprise search over 40+ connected sources — ask one question and it answers across the wiki, the drive, the chat history and the CRM at once.
Deployed 2026-08-20 for one client as the Team Workspace Harness. Heaviest bundle in the stack: nine Railway services, ~$100-200/mo.

Knowledge Management
Markdown-native wiki with Notion-adjacent UX. API keys and MCP access come free in the self-hosted edition.
Our pick. Docmost was evaluated and ruled out — API keys sit behind an Enterprise license.

Deal Flow & Data Rooms
The only fully open-source VDR — unlimited rooms, page-by-page analytics, custom domains.
DealRoom bills flat, not per seat — $12k/yr. ShareVault charges $1.5k–$5k per deal.

Tasks & Projects
Linear-shaped issue tracking — cycles, modules, intake, five layouts — with the full REST API, webhooks and an official MCP server in the free self-hosted edition.
The community edition ships the API free, which is why it clears our bar. It is also the one tool here that keeps its own login — SSO, RBAC, approvals and audit trails are commercial-only, so it sits outside the single front door.

Email, Newsletters & Broadcast
Transactional sends, marketing campaigns, and automation in one tool on an SES backend.
Mailchimp prices by contact count, not seat. SES delivery runs ~$0.10 per 1,000 emails.

Social Media Scheduling
One composer to X, LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, Mastodon and Bluesky.
Hootsuite meters seats and connected accounts; Buffer meters channels. Self-hosting removes both.

CRM & Relationship Intelligence
Modern open-source CRM with native AI/MCP access, so agents get full read/write from day one.
Salesforce Financial Services Cloud runs $325–$750/seat/mo at the tier above.

Automation & Integration
No-code automation builder with an AI-native piece library.
Expenses & Accounting
Full self-hosted accounting — invoicing, bills, expenses, reconciliation and reports, with a client portal.

Agent Chat & Harness
Document-first chat with the strongest RAG story of the group, plus a no-code agent builder and per-workspace document scoping.
Business Intelligence
Born at Airbnb — 40+ database connectors, drag-and-drop charts, and a real SQL lab.

Knowledge Management
The most Notion-shaped option — docs, databases and AI in one app with native desktop clients.

Internal Tools
Drag-and-drop internal tooling with JS anywhere and 25+ native data connectors.

Agentic Browsers
A browser rebuilt for agents: completes multi-step work across the sites you are already logged into — messages, internal tools, payments — without needing an integration for each one.
Processing is local by default and credentials are autofilled rather than exposed to the model. Proprietary, and that is fine here — the point is that it can take instruction from our MCP and agent-skills, not that we host it.
Identity & Access
Full identity provider — SAML, OIDC, LDAP, MFA — so one login opens every tool in the stack.
This is what turns a pile of apps into a single suite from the user's point of view.

Database & Workflow
Airtable-style interface that stays fast at unlimited rows; automations and dashboards included.

Video & Meetings
Whiteboard, breakout rooms, and recording — built for sessions that need structure.

Knowledge Management
Book/chapter/page hierarchy — good shape for organizing investment frameworks.

Agentic Browsers
The harness rather than the browser — the library most agentic browsing is built on. What you reach for when the click-path needs to be codified rather than driven by hand.
109k stars and pushed daily. Already the substrate under a lot of this category.

Agentic Browsers
Open-source agentic browser that runs agents locally against your own tabs and your own model keys.

Internal Tools
Build internal apps over any database in minutes — IC workflows, LP portals, approval flows.
Calendar & Scheduling
The community edition split off when Cal.com went closed-source in April 2026.
Self-hosting old Cal.com Enterprise now requires a paying relationship — no longer a $0 path.

Team Communication
Shared inbox and live chat across email, WhatsApp and web — LP and founder correspondence in one queue.

Documents & PDF
End-to-end encrypted docs, sheets and forms — the server can't read them.

Publishing
Headless CMS and data platform that wraps any SQL database in an API and admin UI.

E-Signature
Fill and sign documents with a clean builder — a lighter e-signature path than Documenso.

Team Communication
End-to-end encrypted messaging on the federated Matrix protocol.

Expenses & Accounting
Expense Claims group many receipts into one submission with approval routing, on top of a proper general ledger — the serious end of firm accounting.
Heaviest thing on this page to run, and the only one that genuinely replaces a mid-market ERP.
Agentic Browsers
Agentic browser built around Deep Action — describe a cross-app workflow in a sentence and it plans, then executes across sites, logins and local files, ending in a generated report.
The browser is proprietary, but its agent framework Eko is MIT and standalone (FellouAI/eko, 4.9k stars) — that is the part you could actually build against. Eko was last pushed 2026-03-03, so check it is still moving before depending on it.

Expenses & Accounting
Lightweight expense tracking with budgets, rules and double-entry underneath — the low-ceremony option when you don't need approvals.
Honest limit: personal-finance shaped. You can approximate a trip with tags, but there is no multi-line expense report or approval chain — use Odoo or ERPNext if you need those.

AI Infrastructure
Visual builder for LLM chains and agents over your own data sources.

Code & Build
Lightweight self-hosted Git forge with CI — where the firm's internal tooling lives.

Forms & Surveys
Surveys and in-app feedback — founder intake, LP pulse checks, portfolio KPI requests.

Publishing
Publishing and paid newsletters with native memberships — the firm's public voice.
Substack's cut is the real cost: on $100k of subscriptions that's $10k a year.

Code & Build
Fast, painless Git hosting that runs comfortably alongside everything else.
Agent Chat & Harness
Block's extensible agent harness — capabilities arrive as installable extensions rather than a fixed toolset, so it grows with the stack.

Monitoring & Status
The dashboarding standard — metrics, logs and traces from every service on one screen.

Database & Workflow
Spreadsheet-database hybrid with real formulas and Python — strong fit for portfolio and cap-table math.

Passwords & Secrets
Secrets management for the stack itself — API keys, DB credentials, rotation.

Finance & Billing
Invoicing, quotes, expenses and payments — management-fee and portfolio billing.

Video & Meetings
Browser-based video with no install, up to 1080p, and complete data control.

Identity & Access
The CNCF-backed identity workhorse — battle-tested SSO and federation.

Finance & Billing
Time tracking for advisory hours, portfolio support and billable work.

Agent Chat & Harness
Multi-model chat with agents, code interpreter and MCP support built in.

Business Intelligence
Modern BI with native dbt integration, for firms with a data-team bent.

Agent Chat & Harness
Multi-agent collaboration workspace with agent groups and a large library of MCP skills.

Product & Web Analytics
Full-featured analytics with 100% data ownership and GDPR-friendly defaults.

Team Communication
Self-hosted Slack clone with strong encryption, deep plugin system, and real mobile apps.

Meetings & Transcription
Bot-free meeting notes: live Parakeet/Whisper transcription with speaker diarization and local summarisation, entirely on your machine. No silent third-party bot joins the call.
29k+ stars. The bot matters more than it sounds — most AI notetakers dial into the meeting as a participant, which means a vendor is sitting in your partner meetings and diligence calls.

Research Capture
Instant, typo-tolerant search you can point at any corpus in the stack.

Business Intelligence
The most beginner-friendly open-source BI — zero-SQL exploration for partners who won't write queries.

Automation & Integration
Visual workflow automation with 400+ integrations and full code escape hatches. The connective tissue of the stack.
The single highest-leverage add: it wires the CRM, data room, wiki and mail together without paying per task.

Agentic Browsers
Multi-agent browser extension that runs web workflows locally with your own API keys.
Last pushed 2025-11-24 — roughly nine months quiet, so treat it as a reference implementation rather than something to deploy.

Deal Flow & Data Rooms
Self-hosted file sync and share with enterprise audit logging and granular access control.

Database & Workflow
Turns any Postgres or MySQL into an Airtable-like UI with auto-generated REST APIs.
Also the recommended base for a custom portfolio-monitoring build.

Expenses & Accounting
Trip-shaped expense reports: snap receipts as you go, group a conference or diligence trip into one submission — flights, hotel, tickets, meals — then route it through multi-level approval straight into the ledger.
The closest open-source match to how a fund actually spends: travel, lodging and conference tickets grouped per trip rather than dribbled in as loose transactions.

Agent Chat & Harness
Self-hosted AI workspace with a real agent underneath — built on opencode with MCP, shell, files, skills and persistent memory, plus a Deep Research mode. The ChatGPT/Claude experience, on your own hardware.
82k+ stars since May 2026. This is the shape of the category: a chat surface that is also an agent harness, pointed at your own stack.

Deal Flow & Data Rooms
Room-based document storage with collaborative editing and GDPR-aligned controls.

Agent Chat & Harness
Self-hosted chat UI over any model, with RAG, tools and per-user workspaces.
Runs against your own documents and your own keys — no prompts leaving the firm.
Documents & PDF
Scan, OCR and index every document — diligence paperwork becomes full-text searchable.

Product & Web Analytics
Lightweight, cookie-free web analytics that doesn't need a consent banner.

Product & Web Analytics
Product analytics, session replay, feature flags and A/B tests in one self-hostable platform.

AI Infrastructure
Vector database — the substrate for search across every tool at once.
This is what makes cross-tool intelligence possible: one index over CRM, wiki, data room and mail.

Calendar & Scheduling
Group find-a-time polls for IC scheduling and partner offsites, where 1:1 booking pages don't fit.

Business Intelligence
Query-first BI for SQL-comfortable analysts doing ad-hoc portfolio work.
Sisense quotes custom, commonly $10k+/yr.

Team Communication
Omnichannel communications with video calls, federation, and full white-labelling.

Meetings & Transcription
Self-hosted transcription with NVIDIA Parakeet and Canary or Whisper, word-level timing, and offline diarization that labels exactly who said what.

Meetings & Transcription
OpenAI-compatible speech-to-text server — partner meetings and founder calls, transcribed on your own hardware.
Recordings never leave the box, which is the only version of this a firm can actually use on deal calls.

Meetings & Transcription
A personal transcription workspace — upload recordings, get searchable transcripts with summaries, keep the archive on your own server.

Documents & PDF
50+ PDF operations — split, merge, redact, sign, OCR — entirely on your own server.

Database & Workflow
Spreadsheet-shaped open-source database with strong relational modeling and a polished UI.
Internal Tools
Low-code builder for admin panels and dashboards over your own tables.

Forms & Surveys
Conversational forms that feel like chat rather than a questionnaire.

Product & Web Analytics
Simple, privacy-first web analytics in a single small service.
Monitoring & Status
Beautiful uptime monitoring and status pages for every service in the stack.

Agent Chat & Harness
Self-hosted answer engine — searches the live web via SearXNG, reranks, and streams a cited answer. Diligence research that never leaves your box and never trains anyone's model.
Formerly Perplexica, renamed March 2026; ~36k stars. Runs against local models via Ollama or any cloud provider.

Passwords & Secrets
Bitwarden-compatible password manager in a tiny Rust server — works with every official Bitwarden client.
One of the cleanest per-seat swaps in the stack: same apps, same UX, no per-seat bill.

Meetings & Transcription
Browser-based transcription for a whole team — upload, transcribe, translate and edit subtitles, 100% locally and happily offline.

Meetings & Transcription
The research-grade engine: 70x realtime with word-level timestamps and pyannote speaker diarization. What you build a custom pipeline on.
Not an app — an engine. Relevant because it is what the tools above are standing on, and you can point it at an archive of past calls.

Knowledge Management
Modern wiki with many auth options and a broad plugin ecosystem.
Automation & Integration
Turn scripts into internal APIs, cron jobs and UIs — a developer-first Zapier.
Identity & Access
Cloud-native identity with multi-tenancy and audit trails built in.

Team Communication
Thread-centric chat whose conversation model actually survives a busy deal week.

Knowledge Management
Local-first chat, docs, databases and files in one CRDT-backed app.
A consolidation play against two categories at once, but far less battle-tested than either incumbent.

Storage & Infrastructure
Self-hostable PaaS — deploy to your own infrastructure instead of Vercel, Heroku or Railway.
Not a category replacement — this is infrastructure, and could become how client stacks get deployed.

E-Signature
Open-source e-signature with 21 CFR Part 11, HIPAA and SOC2 compliance claims.
Fills a real gap — the stack has no e-signature row today, and subscription docs and side letters need one.

Storage & Infrastructure
Link shortening with attribution analytics and affiliate-referral tracking.
Self-hostable but notably heavier than the rest — Next.js, Prisma, MySQL, Upstash and Tinybird.

Design & Whiteboarding
Hand-drawn-style collaborative whiteboard — org charts, cap-table diagrams, IC sketches.

Design & Whiteboarding
Frame-accurate media review with comments, annotations and approval workflows.
Stores into MinIO — a natural companion if the firm's marketing team produces video.

Storage & Infrastructure
CNCF-graduated container registry that stores, signs and scans your images.

Email, Newsletters & Broadcast
Newsletter and mailing-list manager in a single Go binary plus Postgres.
Narrower than Plunk and in the same lane — worth a bench-off rather than running both.

Portfolio Monitoring
Reactive Python notebooks stored as git-friendly .py files and deployable as web apps.
The most plausible engine for the custom portfolio-monitoring build.

Storage & Infrastructure
S3-compatible object storage — the de facto open-source standard, and the layer other tools store into.
Strongest core/ candidate on the watchlist.

Design & Whiteboarding
Design and prototyping with real design tokens and CSS Grid/Flex layouts — a Figma alternative.

Research Capture
Generates RSS feeds for sites that don't offer one — 5,000+ built-in routes.
Better as a feed source into Karakeep than as a standalone tool.

Mail & Calendar Hosting
IMAP, JMAP, SMTP, CalDAV, CardDAV and WebDAV in one Rust binary — the firm's actual mail, not just sends.
Fills the biggest uncovered line item in the stack — nothing else here hosts the firm's inbox.

Tasks & Projects
Self-hosted tasks, projects, notes and areas with smart workflows.
Task management isn't covered anywhere in the stack today.

Calendar & Scheduling
Ground-up Calendly alternative built in response to the Cal.com license shift; SSO, webhooks, Stripe Connect.
